Nonsequitur was founded in 2000 by five Columbia students intent on widening the variety of a cappella groups on campus. Originally conceived as an all-male group specializing in alternative rock, Nonseq (as it’s popularly known) quickly grew to include all genders and genres, eventually becoming Columbia’s hippest group, with a popular following from College Walk to the Barnard Quad to the halls of the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Our members and alumni come from all programs (both undergraduate and graduate) at the University and from all different singing backgrounds. Still, we are all united by a shared commitment to making awesome vocal harmonies, executing killer choreography, and looking generally attractive.
Over the years, Nonseq’s repertoire has widened to include all types of music. Our songs reflect the musical taste of the group, and we aim to explore the ways we can reinvent songs through our arrangements.
In our short existence, we’ve had the privilege to tour in Canada and throughout the East Coast, and we’ve performed with renowned a cappella groups from across the country (and the world!), including Stanford’s Fleet Street, Tufts’ Jackson Jills, the UC Berkeley’s Men’s Octet, NYU APC Rhythm, University of Michigan G-Men and Exeter University's Semi-Toned. We were also fortunate enough to grace the stage in an off-Broadway production, Toxic Audio, in 2004. We used to compete in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), even winning first place in the quarterfinal round in 2009. In 2011, we made it to the ICCA semifinals for the second time. In 2017, the women of Nonseq performed with Milck at Lincoln Center during the New York Times' Women in the World Conference, and got to stay and attend the inspiring summit.
Nonsequitur has also enjoyed great success off the stage. In 2007, we won the Columbia Organizational Achievement Leadership Promise Award (long name, we know) for being the student organization with the best potential for positive impact on Columbia’s campus, becoming the first a cappella group to take home this prize!
Most recently in 2019, we appeared in Season 1, episode 4 of HBO's "Mrs. Fletcher."
